Agnes Gardonyi |
applied artist specialized in cameo crystal glass works |
| |
Being the youngest member of the designer team she joined Ajka Crystal only a few years ago, yet her influence on the collection of the company is clearly visible.
Agnes finished her studies in the College of Applied Arts in Budapest. Ms. Gardonyi always had a strong fascination for nature and love to explore the different art forms, so she ended up in designing crystal art products for Ajka Crystal mostly with natural scenes. With the help of Mrs. Magda Nemeth she explored antique cameo crystals and decided to make a use of the plastic possibilities of cameo glass when designing fine pieces of art.

| |
| Her creations radiate an aura of spirituality, which suggests the Orient, although their formal characteristics are wholly in the contemporary European tradition. Agnes’s work is mostly figurative, and her intention is to capture something unique from each of her subjects, and make the resulting piece of art memorable. She uses a method of creating crystal products in which abstraction and figurative images combine and reinforce each other’s effect.
The motifs and the colors within the picture also create an atmosphere of calmness and a general feeling of harmony and ease. The scenes of nature’s harmony, natural beauty and innocence running throughout her series of work are exploring cheerfulness and feeling projection. |
| |
| Ms. Gardonyi is not just a master of the rediscovered antique cameo technique but she also managed to develop the technique - the sand blown technology is considered to be unique among crystal manufacturers. |

Few words about cameo crystal |
| Glassmaking craft’s one of the finest and most skilled example is cameo glass. Cameo glass is a multilayered glass that is decorated with figures and forms carved through the layer so that it stands out in relief from the surface and the colored layers form the contrast of the picture. Such glassware is manufactured by blowing two or more layers of glass together. The expression cameo applies to any carving in the picture in which the picture is raised above the surrounding surface. Manufacturing takes high skills, time, patience and passion for glass and art. The earliest cameo glass pieces were made by the Romans about 2000 years ago. The Portland Vase is probably the best example from that era. At the end of the 19th century famous English and French glass artists as Northwood, Woodall, Galle, the Daums and the Muller Freres rediscovered cameo glass and made these pieces of unique glassware very popular. Today handcrafted cameo glass pieces are prized high by collectors because of the phenomenal amount of time, skills and labor to produce. Many pieces of cameo of glass are hold for pride of place in museums throughout the world. |
