Color is an integral element in art and design. Anything that has been created by man has always been infused with color, even if the color is nothing but bleak black. Even crystal clear is its own color. Man has always had a love affair with color ever since he began learning how to decorate his abode.

The art of making crystal vases and glass vessels has not escaped man’s penchant for color. When Roman craftsmen learned the groundbreaking technique of working glass through glass blowing during the classical times, the limits as to how crystal glass can be molded and formed was simply taken away. The artist in the glass craftsman was set free; naturally, how to put different kinds of color into glass is something that could be played with.

There are many ways of playing with color on crystal vases and glass vessels. One such technique is done by fusing together two or more layers of glass, each layer of a different color. What the glass craftsman does is to blow a gather to create the outer layer and wrap it around a metal mold. Another layer is then blown into it. Afterwards, the mold is taken from the piece, and the piece is allowed to be heated once more so the layers would fuse together. The outer layer is usually thicker than the inner layers. And then, what the glass craftsman does is to etch or cut away at the outer layer of glass in order to reveal the colors of the inner layers. How the intricacies of color and pattern will be revealed depends on the design the glass artist has in mind.

Vividness of color is never lacking in a cased glass vase and the glass artist can be as whimsical as he wishes to in working with cased glass vases. His only limit is his imagination. Cased glass vases are ideal gifts for people who love the elegance of glass but also love to play with color. They would look lovely whether they are set with flowers of a contrasting or complementing color, or left to stand alone.
