| Location - Hungary |
Hungary is situated on the border of the Western hemisphere and the former Soviet Union. The country has a history over twelve hundred years and has always been a key player in the Central European region. |
The country was part of the polyglot Austro-Hungarian Empire, which collapsed during World War I. The country fell under communist rule following World War II. In 1956 a revolt and withdrawal from the Warsaw Pact were met with a massive military intervention by Moscow. In the more open 1980s Hungary led the movement to dissolve the Warsaw Pact and steadily shifted toward multiparty democracy and a market-oriented economy. The old manufactures and factories were privatised and began to flourish in the new economic circumstances. Hungary developed close political and economic ties to Western Europe. It joined the NATO in 1999 and will be the member of the EU at 1st May 2004. |
